Payroll Techniques is an intensive 3-day, face-to-face qualification programme designed to help you expand, refresh, and consolidate your payroll knowledge – while working towards an industry-recognised Pearson BTEC Level 3 Award.
Across three structured days, you’ll cover key technical areas that payroll professionals regularly deal with in practice, including tax and National Insurance calculations, statutory payments and family leave, and advanced payroll deductions and employment legislation.

After the taught programme, you can complete the optional assignments to achieve the qualification.

What you’ll achieve

You cover how the UK tax and NI system works, including key dates, rates, allowances, thresholds, and the importance of NI numbers.
You then move into core payroll calculation skills:

Pay and earnings periods (weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly, monthly) and using the tax calendar correctly

Tax codes, cumulative vs Week 1/Month 1, HMRC notifications, pay adjustments, and calculating tax

NI table letters and NI rules for different employee groups (under 21, apprentices under 25, state pension age, etc.) plus calculation methods

Step-by-step manual payroll exercises and payslip legal requirements
This day covers statutory family payments and sickness in detail, including eligibility, evidence, notice rules, calculations, and forms.

SMP: entitlement dates, average earnings, early birth, multiple employers, how much to pay/recover, and forms (e.g., SMP1/SMP2)

Maternity rights (OML vs AML, notice, terms and conditions, returning to work)

Overview of SAP and parental leave/time off for dependants

SPP: eligibility, key dates, evidence, average earnings, special cases, and forms

Overview of Shared Parental Leave and Pay (criteria, notice, ShPP rate)

SSP: PIWs, linking, qualifying/waiting days, evidence, average earnings, entitlement decisions, and SSP1

Step-by-step statutory payment calculations with examples and tutor support
Day 3 ties payroll calculations to employment legislation and advanced deduction handling.
You cover:

Correct tax/NI treatment of items such as expenses, vouchers, approved mileage, holiday pay, PILON, and post-termination payments

Lawful deductions and wage protection rules (statutory, contractual, voluntary deductions) and avoiding problems when recovering overpayments

National Minimum Wage rights and record-keeping requirements

Working Time Regulations: rights, paid annual leave rules, record keeping

Asylum and Immigration Act: procedures to avoid penalties when taking on new employees

Court Orders (types across the UK, depending on location) plus calculation exercises
