Payroll Technician Online

Online
30 weeks

Payroll Techniques Online is a qualification-based programme designed for people who want to expand, refresh, or consolidate their payroll knowledge and gain an industry-recognised Level 3 qualification.

It’s particularly suited to payroll professionals who need to confidently handle the more technical day-to-day areas of payroll, including statutory leave and pay, court orders, and student loan deductions. Alongside payroll calculations and deductions, the qualification also introduces key legislation that impacts payroll operations, helping you understand wider compliance responsibilities.

This programme builds on foundation learning (such as basic payroll calculations) and is structured to support career development for payroll professionals, as well as HR and accounts staff with payroll responsibilities.

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification will benefit:

  • Payroll professionals with basic experience who want to progress and gain a recognised Level 3 qualification
  • Payroll teams who need to incorporate statutory payments, court orders, and student loans into payroll processing
  • HR and accounts staff who support payroll and need stronger understanding of payroll obligations and related legislation

What you’ll achieve

By the end of the programme, you will be able to confidently deal with advanced areas of payroll, including:

  • Payments and deductions from wages (including overpayments)
  • Statutory leave and statutory pay
  • Court Orders
  • Student Loans

You’ll also gain an overview of how wider legislation affects payroll, including:

  • Working Time Regulations
  • National Minimum Wage Act
  • Asylum and Immigration Act

Develop a clearer understanding of how payroll calculations work behind the scenes. This strengthens accuracy, helps you spot issues quickly, and improves your confidence when checking payroll results.

Understand what can legally be deducted from pay, how to apply deductions correctly, and how to handle sensitive situations such as overpayments.

Learn how working time rules impact pay and payroll processes, including compliance considerations that often sit between payroll and HR.

Build awareness of employer responsibilities and how immigration-related legislation can affect payroll processes and employment checks.

Cover the payroll handling of court orders, including how deductions are calculated and applied, and how to manage this accurately through payroll.

Learn how to process student loan deductions correctly and confidently, including how deductions operate and what payroll needs to record and report.

Understand eligibility, calculation principles, and the payroll actions required when managing SMP.

Gain working knowledge of employee rights and payroll responsibilities connected to maternity, paternity, and adoption arrangements.

Understand how Shared Parental Leave and Pay works at a practical level, including what payroll needs to do and how it fits alongside other statutory family payments.

Learn the payroll fundamentals of SSP processing, including when it applies and what payroll must calculate and record.

Yes, this qualification is designed for individuals with some existing payroll knowledge. It builds on foundation-level understanding, such as basic payroll calculations, and moves into more technical payroll areas including statutory payments and lawful deductions. If you are completely new to payroll, a foundation course would usually be recommended first.

On successful completion, you will achieve the Pearson BTEC Level 3 in Payroll Techniques, awarded by Pearson. This is a recognised Level 3 qualification that demonstrates intermediate payroll competence.

The programme is delivered fully online over 30 weeks. You follow structured modules and complete assessments remotely, allowing you to study alongside your current role.

Assessment is based on coursework and assignments rather than a final written exam. You complete structured tasks that demonstrate your understanding of payroll legislation and application in practice.

The programme runs over 30 weeks. Study time will vary depending on experience, but most learners plan regular weekly study sessions to stay on track.
